Why water damage is urgent
Water damage is the most time-sensitive kind of photo deterioration. Mold grows within 48 hours of exposure. Colors bleed irreversibly. Photos stuck together in wet albums bond permanently if not separated while damp.
If you’ve recently found water-damaged photos (flood, pipe leak, storage accident), the first priority is to dry them correctly. The second is to digitize them before the damage gets worse.
Step 1: Dry the photos properly
If photos are still wet, handle them by the edges only. Lay them face-up on a clean, absorbent surface (paper towels, clean cotton). Do not use a hair dryer or direct heat — this causes curling and accelerates ink bleeding.
- Separate stuck photos gently while still damp — once dry, they bond permanently
- Air dry in a cool, well-ventilated room away from direct sunlight
- Place a light weight on corners if photos start curling as they dry
- If mold is visible, wear gloves and isolate affected photos from clean ones
Step 2: Digitize immediately
Once dry, capture the photos as soon as possible. Water damage continues to worsen over months even after drying — colors shift, paper warps, and remaining moisture causes spots.
A phone camera capture is fine for most photos. Hold it flat, use natural light, and avoid shadows. Nostalgia’s Photo Check will tell you if the capture quality is good enough.
Step 3: Restore with AI
AI restoration can help with many types of water damage: faded colors, water stains, lost contrast, and general degradation. It works best when there’s still visible detail in the photo — faces, shapes, textures.
What AI can’t recover: areas where the image is completely washed out (pure white or pure black with no detail remaining). In those cases, the AI will clean up everything around the damage but can’t invent missing content.
What to expect from results
- Minor water staining: AI typically removes 80–90% of visible damage
- Color bleeding: AI can correct shifted colors but can’t fully reverse bleed between adjacent prints
- Mold spots: Usually cleaned up well, similar to scratch removal
- Stuck photos (partially peeled): AI repairs visible areas but torn/missing sections remain
- Completely waterlogged: Depends on remaining detail — Photo Check will assess before you spend a credit
