How the check works
- We find each face in your original, then look at the same place in the restoration.
- An open face-recognition model, SFace from the OpenCV model collection, describes each face, and we measure how alike the two descriptions are, from 1 for identical downwards.
- We draw the line at 0.857. On the restorations we first judged by eye, the ones that kept the people measured 0.894 and above, and the ones that put a different face in measured 0.821 and below.
- Faces smaller than about 40 pixels across are too small to measure precisely, so we say so instead of guessing, unless one measures below 0.500, lower than any careful repair reached at that size.
- Then we ran it on 75 restorations whose faces we had judged by eye. Of 18 that put a different face in, 14 read as changed, 3 were too small to check or had no face we could find, and 1 read as the same people because the changed face was not found. Of 57 that kept the people, 38 read as the same people, 13 read as changed, often a face smoothed or sharpened, and 6 were too small or had no face we could find.
- So a low number is not proof of a different person, and a high number means the faces are alike as far as this measurement can tell. It is a measurement to guide your own eyes, not a verdict.
Your photos
Both photos go to our server only for the check, are compared in memory and are deleted as soon as the answer is sent. We do not store them, and they are not used to train anything.
Restore a photo with Nostalgia
Nostalgia keeps your original beside every restoration, so you can always compare the faces yourself.
